Journal Entry from Band Days Past

I was going through my notes on my iPhone and found the only journal entry I made at the start of our 5-week tour through Canada/U.S.. I thought it interesting. Enjoy.

“April 12, 2013

“If you want an illustrious career in rock n’ roll, I suggest you think about it…” Greg Dean (on the KMFDM Beat By Beat Tour 1995).

I just want to say about that quote above: Our trip is most likely not as crazy as some bands’, but touring in a band is not like a road trip with your friends or family, and it’s not really like camping except for some things you bring with you. We don’t have a crew, and playing is merely 10% of our job. The rest is lugging/hooking up our gear, driving long hours (and battling the elements), being paranoid about security, taking extra care in maintaining our health, and eating not as wholesome as we’d like.

Day 1 of the Short Circuit Tour (excluding the Toronto show, cause we didn’t actually leave until the following Thursday)..

Drive was alright. Chals got one of those fancy “GoPro” cameras to document our journey. I swear they use those in the Canada’s Worst Driver tv-show.

Anyways, the 8-hr drive seemed short. The quaint size of Sault Ste. Marie reminded me of certain areas of Regina, and Moose Jaw, SK. It’s bigger than I thought, since the last time we travelled through (at night) back in late-fall 2009.

We get to the venue ’round 5:45pm and eventually meet the promoter. Nice guy. Fed us, bought us drinks. As the night rolls along after soundcheck and we’re playing the “hurry up and wait” game, I’m starting to get super tired. I’ve been up since 4:30am and by 11pm I was ready to crash. I was given an energy drink and after finally playing I gained a second wind.

A nice couple invited us to their house to sleep and shower. I had especially taken advantage of the shower.

Unfortunately the crazy snow storm from southern Ontario had caught up with us, and the next morning had us a little weary. On our way out of the city, a snowy steep hill stopping us from progressing as we halted half way up, and causing us to “jack-knife” the trailer trying to back up DOWN the hill. Chals warned on-coming traffic, as us dudes pushed the fully packed heavy trailer SIDEWAYS to get straight, disconnect from the van, then swing around to aim down the hill, then painstakingly re-attach to the van without getting run over by our own trailer.

After finding an alternate route, we hit up Timmy’s and fill up on gas. Then it’s continuing on the seemingly perilous mid-April winter journey to Thunder Bay.

I hope there’s enough lightning in Thunder Bay to zap this snow into hell.”

Being In A Rock Band (Part 3 of 3)

The 1 hour finale of my story of being in The Rabid Whole.
I talk about the period of about June 2013 to the end of 2014, and my thoughts on the end, and what I think we did wrong.

I realized that I hadn’t explained why I’ve been getting my leg infections. I’d been through radiation tests, tons of blood work, and samples of the swelling pus that would appear from my leg, and nothing came up that was wrong. My doctor said if there is nothing it’s “idiopathic”. To me it’s the physical manifest of stress, and unhappiness. Thankfully I hadn’t had an outbreak since about July 2015.

Photo of my reflection  from my adventure hat taken early 2012 on our way to SXSW when we stopped at a hotel, and everyone with us decided to go out for supper, and I stayed behind to be alone.

Here’s my statement about The Rabid Whole I did back in early 2015: https://radutron.com/2015/06/08/i-gotta-tell-ya-folks/

Talking About My Time In The Rabid Whole (Part 2 of 3)

This is a long one so you might want to get some snacks…

In this second part, I’m recalling my time in The Rabid Whole from end of 2010 to mid-2013. Things got pretty serious.

The song “Metro” from The Rabid Whole’s second album REFUGE is posted at the end of the video.

The live still after the game footage is from a gopro taped to my guitar during a show in Dallas, TX, back in 2013, touring with Dope Stars Inc.

Enjoy my terrible playing of Pinball Quest for NES.
Yes, it’s an emulator. I own the cartridge. I don’t have the means to capture my retro consoles.

Talking about my time in The Rabid Whole (Part 1 of 3)

My “Stuttering and Stammering” videos continue with me talking about my first few years in The Rabid Whole and its key moments of our progress as a band. The first of 3 videos. Enjoy some NES goodness from Power Blade, and there’s our first track we ever wrote called “Selfish Nature” at the end of the video.

Artists Flipping Me The Bird (2013).

These pictures were taken during the first leg of the “Built To Fuck, Born To Tour”, ending at COLD WAVES II. The Rabid Whole providing direct support for BILE, back in September 2013. It was a very memorable time, especially in Chicago. I got to meet some new people, and get some of my friends in on this. I thought I’d post these on here instead on leaving them on facebook, hoping they’d reach a wider audience. -G

All the way from Brazil!

I got an awesome email from a fan of my band The Rabid Whole. His name is Marcos, and he made his own TRW t-shirt, and has seen my blog, and decided to send me a pic of himself. Pretty cool, eh? I think so.

On a side note, I’m coming back to my regular blogging schedule, very soon!

Boom.

My Year-In Report of Gaming and Music

If you know me well enough, music and gaming are my top 2 favourite things ever. This past year has been a consumption of media as much as I see stupid memes on Facebook of that dumb angry cat. I think I’ve become a digital hoarder of sorts.

MUSIC
In a sea of randomness of music out there, there’s been literally a select few that have been worthy of a purchase. Now not all of these are 2012 releases, but they are new to my ears this year.

Lazerhawk – “Visitors” (80’s Sci-Fi inspired instrumental stuff. RAD!)
The Birthday Massacre – “Hide And Seek” (Catchy dark-rock/industrial-pop music.)
Hanzel Und Gretyl – “Born To Be Heiled” (Awesome German-parody-esc metal, that brings a smile to my face.)
Deus Ex: Human Revolution Soundtrack (by Michael McCann)

…and that’s about all that has tickled my fancy…

This year has also seen the release of my band The Rabid Whole’s album “REFUGE”, and my EP of covers. Both of which I’m particularly proud to have varying degrees of participation in. The Rabid Whole playing in Austin, Texas, was a spectacular experience. One I will never forget. Not to mention the other festivals we’ve had the pleasure to play this year.

Being in The Rabid Whole has been quite the journey this year as well. I developed the skill of bringing MIDI-controlled lights to The Rabid Whole’s live show, as well as other computer automated tasks for our keyboardist, Chalsey. It’s been a learning experience both technically, and socially as we learn more about each other and work as a team. This line-up of The Rabid Whole has achieved more things in this last year than any other year prior to it. The winds of change for the band will no doubt bring new experiences for us all in 2013.

GAMING
2012 has been crazy in re-living classics, living classics for the first time, and catching up with recent releases. Mind you, I still have to find the time to PLAY some of these games. Some have been a steal-of-a-deal (and I’m not talking about piracy).

CONCLUSION
I always have time for music, but immersing myself in a good game is quite the challenge these days. But 2013 should prove to be quite the challenge yet as The Rabid Whole continue to grow, while I discover new music, and satiate my inner escapist. Maybe my writing skills will improve too. 😛

Boom.
